UCL School of Management is delighted to welcome Tima Bansal, IVEY, to host a research seminar discussing: Why Strategic Management Needs Systems Thinking.
Abstract:
In this seminar, Tima Bansal will argue that the analytical methods used by most strategy scholars and managers to tackle business problems is increasingly less fit for purpose. They were developed under assumptions of independent variables and causality, yet the world is increasingly interconnected. She suggests that strategic management needs new methods and ways of thinking that allow for interdependence and complexity. She proposes systems thinking as a complementary approach to analytical thinking, depending on the type of problem being tackled. She will outline the fundamental assumptions that underlie systems thinking and outline their implications to both management research and practice.
