PhD candidate Martina Pizzinato has won the Best Student-Led Paper Award from the Academy of Management’s Managerial and Organisational Cognition Division.
In her paper, A Clown Car of One’s Own: How Marginalized Creatives Cultivate Space for Creative Work, Martina studies women comedians, showing how marginalised creatives’ identities and experiences shape how they engage in creative work and how they define its meaning and purpose.
By carrying out an inductive, qualitative study of women comedians, Martina identified the tension women face between marginalised creative threats embedded in their environments and their own marginalised creative values. The way women responded to this allowed them to see and ambrace their gender as a force enriching and transforming their creative work.
Martina is part of the Organisations and Innovation Group. Her research explores how people navigate novelty in the workplace, with a focus on creative and marginalised workers. As well as women in comedy, she has studied migrant women of colour, illustrators, museum curators and AI developers.
