Biography

Alison Pittaway is a part-time teaching assistant at UCL, specialising in advancing critical and analytical thinking skills among students. Alison’s 25+ years as a journalist have instilled in her the importance of thinking critically and analysing all aspects of an issue. Alison has dedicated her career to making complex ideas accessible, thought-provoking, and relevant to diverse audiences.

Alison holds a degree in Psychology and Neuroscience of Mental Health from King’s College London, which underpins her deep understanding of human behaviour and cognitive processes. Her journalistic expertise spans science, technology, and psychology, allowing her to explore how these fields intersect and impact individuals and society. From mental health advocacy to emerging technological trends, Alison’s writing distils intricate subjects into compelling, relatable narratives.

In addition to her academic and professional endeavours, Alison is a skilled artist, jewellery designer and entrepreneur. Based in Worcestershire, England, she creates bespoke, handcrafted pieces using recycled precious metals and repurposed materials, reflecting her commitment to sustainability and craftsmanship. This creative pursuit enhances her ability to approach challenges with precision and innovation—qualities she also brings to her teaching.

At UCL, Alison thrives on empowering students to think critically and engage deeply with complex ideas. Her teaching philosophy emphasises intellectual curiosity, encouraging learners to challenge assumptions, evaluate evidence, and develop unique perspectives. Drawing on her extensive experience as a journalist, she also equips students with practical research, analysis, and communication skills.

When not teaching or writing, Alison enjoys hiking and the outdoors and exploring human psychology and behaviour. She is passionate about lifelong learning and continually seeks to inspire others through her writing, teaching, or creative pursuits. Alison aims to help others unlock their potential by fostering a deeper understanding of the world and themselves.
