Biography

Matt Wilde is a Lecturer in Social Change and Deputy Programme Director of the Management for Social Change BSc. A social anthropologist by training, his expertise lies in the study of urban social movements, the politics of energy and the state. Matt received his PhD in Anthropology from the London School of Economics (LSE) in 2013 and previously held teaching positions at the University of Leicester, the University of Sussex and the LSE.

Matt has conducted extensive ethnographic fieldwork in Latin America, the UK and the USA. His research has been funded by the British Academy, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) and the Independent Social Research Fund (ISRF). Matt’s first monograph, an an ethnographic study of the relationship between oil dependency and social change in Venezuela, was published by Stanford University Press in 2023. Matt is an award-winning educator and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). At UCL’s School of Management, he leads modules on the History of Social Movements, the Economics of Social Change and Volunteering in the Non-Profit Sector.
